Kometa Brno are one of the most storied and successful ice hockey clubs in Czechia and are based in the country's second biggest city, Brno. The club were originally founded in 1953 under the name Rudá hvězda Brno (Red Star Brno), but over the decades, the team underwent several name changes, including ZKL Brno and TJ Zetor Brno, before adopting its current name, HC Kometa Brno, in the early 1990s.
Throughout their history, Kometa have built a strong legacy both domestically and internationally. The club has won a total of 14 national league championships, with 11 titles earned during the Czechoslovak era, making it the dominant force in Czechoslovak hockey during the 1950s and 60s. After a long period without major titles, Kometa made a triumphant return to form in the 2010s, capturing back-to-back Czech Extraliga championships in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons and added their most recent league title in 2024/25. In addition to their national success, the team has also claimed three European Cup titles, and won the Spengler Cup.
Kometa play their home games at the Winning Group Arena, formerly known as DRFG Arena and Kajot Arena. The venue opened in 1982 and has a capacity of around 7,700 spectators. Over the years, it has undergone several renovations to improve facilities for both players and fans, and it remains one of the iconic hockey venues in the country.
The club enjoys a passionate and loyal fanbase and the team are known for their strong community presence and deep ties to the city of Brno, which takes great pride in the club’s long-standing traditions and achievements.
Kometa Brno have played in two past Champions Hockey League seasons, 2017/18 and 2018/19, and made the Quarter-Finals on both occasions.
