- Both teams have won only one game so far this CHL season
- KooKoo's first-ever CHL campaign
- Both teams in fight for spot in the Playoffs
KAC Klagenfurt host KooKoo Kouvola in Austria for a crucial clash between two teams still competing for a place in the Playoffs. Heading into this Game Day 5 clash, both teams have won one and will be looking for a win to get into the Playoffs mix.
Klagenfurt’s opening match-up looked to be an impressive debut for reigning French champions Bordeaux Boxers, though the Austrian powerhouse eventually overpowered them in OT. Klagenfurt’s CHL campaign then unfortunately turned upside down, as they suffered a string of defeats.
The Austrians faced a brutal Regular Season draw, facing a duo of national champions in Fribourg-Gottéron and Storhamar Hamar, before going on to face one of the most in-form teams of the season so far - Kölner Haie. Looking ahead, the Austrians need to up their scoring (currently scoring only five goals in four games) keep their composure on special unit play and slightly tidy up their goaltending to give them a more stable base to build on.
Meanwhile, Finnish team KooKoo kicked off their first-ever CHL campaign in style, handing Danish debutants Herning Blue Fox a fierce 5-2 defeat. KooKoo struck early and sustained pressure throughout the game, successfully fending off Herning’s late pushback.
However, the celebrations were short-lived as the Finns then suffered a narrow OT loss to reigning CHL Champions Frölunda Gothenburg after a late mistake proved costly for KooKoo. After that, KooKoo's home advantage didn’t prove beneficial either, despite generating some quality opportunities against Slovak champions HK Nitra, KooKoo lost by 4-1 following a late collapse.
Game Day 4 saw KooKoo open the scoring and add two more, but Dynamo Pardubice proved too demanding an opponent, skating away with a 6-3 victory. KooKoo have displayed killer scoring, but have been a bit loose in defence and goaltending - if they tighten up in these areas, they'll have an edge over Klagenfurt on the road.
