- Kouvola dictated the pace of play from start to finish
- Mannheim's defensive woes were costly
- Marcus Davidsson scored a hattrick for the Finns
KooKoo Kouvola manufactured their third win of the 2026/27 Champions Hockey League campaing with a 5-2 victory over Adler Mannheim. A strong start gave the Finns a three-goal lead which they later added to to help secure the win and most importantly a place in the Playoffs.
The Finns found twine twice courtesy of Marcus Davidsson in quick succession to open the scoring in the first stanza. The first tally came with five minutes remaining in regulation when Davidsson tucked it in far side with a wraparound. The forward gained the zone, skated below the red line and brought it around the back of the net before sliding it past Maximilian Franzreb. Then the forward made it 2-0 moments later when he gained control of the puck near the top of the blue paint and lifted it far side.
Then in the second, it was Davidsson converting on a shorthanded tally to complete the hattrick when he pounced on a loose puck in his own zone, skated past a defender and shifted forehand backhand before sliding it through the wickets of the German netminder.
But then the Germans notched their own short-handed marker when Anthony Greco let one go after scooping up a rebound to cut the deficit to two goals. Jasper Patrikainen made the initial save but the rebound slid right to Greco who casually swatted it past the backstop to secure his fourth of the campaign.
The third stanza began with Kouvola extending their lead once again. This time, it was Veeti Miettinen sinking one when he finished off a brilliant play by Ville Meskanen. Meskanen deked his way around one defender in the neutral zone before skating in and dishing it off to Miettinen who deposited it into the back of the cage.
Mannheim responded with a tally of their own when a shot-pass deflected off a Kouvola defender's stick and into the net to make it 4-2 with ten minutes still to play in the final frame. Brooks Macek attempted to slide the puck towards a teammate above the crease, but the defender's stick tipped it up and over the glove of a helpless Patrikainen.
Kouvola eventually sealed the victory with an empty-netter courtesy of Oskari Luoto as the Germans did their best to battle back, but it was ultimately a lost cause as they went on to suffer their second loss of the season.
